Data management company Talend has acquired the German open source software business Sopera.

The acquisition, which was for an undisclosed amount, is to be financed by a $34 million (£21.3 million) funding round led by US-based venture capital firm Silver Lake Sumeru. Existing Talend investors including London-based Balderton Capital and IdInvest Partners also participated in the current investment round.

Yves de Montcheuil, VP of marketing at Talend, tells M&A: ‘The rationale for the acquisition is to create a global company with a broader product base. Sopera has a strong presence in the German market that will be of great benefit to us.’

He adds that the funding is also to support the integration and deployment of the new technology and possible future acquisitions.

Following the deal Sopera will become Talend’s application integration division, retaining its current staff.

Paris-based Talend produces open source data management software for customers including the BBC and the Financial Times. The company also has headquarters in San Francisco and operations in the UK.

Sopera operates in Germany, Ireland and the US and has around 60 staff. The company’s software management products allow multiple computer applications to share services and work together.
