The technology sector in both Cardiff and Bristol has been growing exponentially in the last few years and a new Cyber Innovation Hub in the Welsh capital could assist the country in becoming a global leader in the industry.
As it stands, the Welsh cyber sector employs 4 per cent of the cybersecurity professionals based in the UK, with 51 cyber-related businesses based in Wales.
The new Innovation Hub, which received a total of £9.5m in funding, hopes to train over 1,000 cyber-skilled individuals and target more than a 50 per cent growth in the Welsh cyber sector by 2030.
According to Kellie Beirne, the city deal director of Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) – one of the co-funders of the new hub – this initiative will drive opportunities in the cyber security sector and help those with tech careers move in an upward trajectory.
The Southwest of England will also see an expansion of the tech sector, with Bristol being named one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech hubs.
In 2021 alone, unicorns in Bristol attracted over £100m in venture capital funding and research for the government’s Digital Economy Council expect an increase in investment and job opportunities in the flourishing sector.
The study found that Bristol has over 3,000 tech job opportunities, ranking the vibrant city in the top five of a “Tech Power League” table of cities behind Edinburgh, Oxford, Manchester and Cambridge.

It goes without saying that the tech scene in Bristol is booming with job opportunities, and according to an analysis by the Digital Economy Council, the average advertised salary for jobs in the sector is £50,404.
