To provide city workers with a faster way of negotiating the crowds, US-based Hammacher Schlemmer has come out with the Only Scootercase, fusing a traditional scooter with the needs of today’s business people.

Business trips can be demanding when they involve you battling city traffic jams while ensuring that you’re carrying necessary documents around with you. But fret no further, because online store Hammacher Schlemmer has launched an innovative offering called the Only Scootercase.

The product is a suitcase that converts into a scooter via two built-in skate wheels and a fold-out footboard. Hammacher Schlemmer’s general manager, Fred Berns, explains, ‘The only Scootercase has the same capacity as a traditional carry-on suitcase with the added benefit of providing a fun, faster way to reach a destination.’ Travellers have lots of storage space within this new invention as it boasts a padded laptop compartment that has three storage slots for documents. Zips demarcate the interior (which measures one cubic metre) for storing shoes, lunch or whatever else – while the suitcase’s telescoping handle acts as the handlebars.

New-York based Hammacher Schlemmer, which bills itself as America’s longest-running catalogue, markets itself as ‘offering the best, the only and the unexpected’. Time will tell whether the Scootercase will revolutionise the morning commute, or join the ranks of the Sinclair c5, the Segway and other personal transport devices that never quite took off. Those willing to give it a go can purchase one online for £190.
