Website optimisation and its benefits

Article Date:  Jan 10 2007

Website optimisation is the process of reducing website size and complexity to maximise the site performance, and involves fine-tuning the HTML source code that builds each web page. Put simply, this means that if you make your web page search engine-friendly, more people will visit it.

If you consider that a large percentage of first time visitors to your site will come via one of the major search engines, website optimisation can have a big impact on the traffic to your site and ultimately sales.

Search engine optimisation for websites, on the other hand, differs from this although these terms are often used interchangeably as they can both result in increased traffic.

Search engine optimisation is the process of increasing the relevance of your site for search engines, by using commonly used search terms or keywords. To increase traffic to your site, try and anticipate every word or phrase that potential visitors are likely to use when searching on the internet. Then place as many of these words in the opening paragraphs of Web site copy and litter them throughout the rest of the text. It’s important to be sensible though, as you can be removed from several search engines for trying to increase your web traffic through search terms.

Thanks Adrian. For those who aren't familiar with these terms, do you think you could explain what you mean by 'Title tag' and 'back links' here. I assume you are referring to meta tagging.

The title tag is the most relevant within the meta remit, and back linking also is a key component to a companies SEO strategy but there are other key initiatives which can help push you up the natural listings. For example you can upload content on a regular basis, key word linking within articles taking your users to relevant areas in your site or to other related websites, implementing forums, blogs, site maps etc. Getting high on natural listings is very difficult because Google and other search engines are continually changing and updating their algorithms!
