Cloud business Sonian has acquired Webroot's email archiving business for an undisclosed amount.

Cloud business Sonian has acquired Webroot's email archiving business for an undisclosed amount.

Under the terms of the deal, Webroot customers and prospective customers of its email archiving business will move over to UK and US-based Sonian.

According to Sonian, the purchase extends its customer base to over 9,000 customers. The business recently set up its EMEA office in Berkshire.

Jeff Dickerson, chief executive officer of Sonian, comments: 'As the archiving market continues to expand, Sonian recognised this acquisition as a significant benefit for not only Webroot and Sonian, but also our channels and customers alike.

'By being able to interact directly with our new partners and customers, we can offer them the cloud and archiving strategies they need to continue driving down storage costs, fulfilling discovery requests, and expanding their archiving footprint beyond email to file archiving and social media.'

Webroot is currently leaving the email security market to focus on anti-malware services for mobile devices.

As an investor in Sonian, Webroot had sold the company's cloud-based email archiving service over the last two years under its own brand.

Dick Williams, chief executive officer of US-based Webroot, adds: 'Webroot has cultivated an extremely strong relationship with Sonian over the past years as our partner in archiving services.

'We believe the future of internet security lies in endpoint, web and mobile protection against today's sophisticated web-based threats.'
