The secrets of success
Decisions based on gut feelings, a non-aggressive attitude and the ability to lead an unstressful life are key characteristics of high-flyers, according to research from the Academy of High Achievers. David Hyner, researcher and trainer for the Academy, has spent eight years conducting interviews with top achievers in business, science, politics, entertainment, sport and academia, in a bid to find out what makes an individual successful. Those under the spotlight include the likes of inventor Trevor Bayliss, former Liverpool and England skipper Emlyn Hughes, Steve Smith, founder of high street chain Poundland, and Betty Boothroyd, first woman speaker of the House of Commons. ‘The only time that true advancement is made is when those few people or individuals who are prepared to think and dream big, have the courage to pursue their dream and have a go,’ proclaims Hyner. Other findings found that goal-setting methods fly in the face of conventional wisdom – with successful individuals setting targets which, to others, might sound unattainable.
